Provenance: Joseph Haslewood (1769-1833, antiquary, editor, bibliophile and co-founder of the Roxburghe Club, oval gilt vellum bookplate) -- C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 11 March 1946, lot 1923).

FIRST EDITION of these twenty songs, six by John Bennet, two by Edward Pearce and the remainder by Thomas Ravenscroft (c.1582-c.1635), English editor, composer and theorist. Five of the songs are on hunting and hawking ('A Hunts vp', 'A Hunting Song', 'A Hawks vp for a Hunts vp', 'For the Partridge' and 'For the Hearne & Duck'), four on dancing, three on drinking ('Of Beere', 'Of Ale' and 'Of Ale and Tobacco') and eight on 'enamoring', the last four in broad West Country dialect. Grove XV (p.623) states: 'The book itself, despite its impressive array of authorities, is an ambiguous discussion of the contemporary misuse of mensuration signs and an attempt to impose order on the chaos by advocating a return to medieval practice' and ends by stating that the composer was highly regarded by his contemporaries, a fact borne out by the nine prefatory verses in the volume by, inter alios, Thomas Campion, John Dowland, Nathaniel Giles (c.1558-1634), organist at St George's Chapel, Windsor, and Martin Peerson (c.1571-1651), composer, virginalist and organist who worked frequently with Ravenscroft. SCHWERDT COPY. Lowndes III, 2053; Schwerdt II, pp. 126-27; STC 20756.
