THE VERY RARE THIRD EDITION of Stokes' treatise on vaulting: 'a very singular and curious work' (Lowndes). NO COPY IN BL. Vaulting, along with riding, was not only very popular in England by this date, but had become an integral part of a young gentleman's education. The first two editions of this popular work had been published in London and Oxford in 1641 and 1652 respectively. Glover (born 1618), who has signed the frontispiece, was an accomplished portraitist and 'one of the earliest English engravers' (DNB) who frequently worked for booksellers. Madan states that 'no copy of this edition ... seems to be in the great libraries' (citing only the incomplete Bindley copy), and ESTC locates only one copy (Hampshire County Library, Southampton). ONLY ONE COPY HAS APPEARED AT AUCTION SINCE 1902 (Sotheby's 27 July 1948, £50 to Maggs, possibly this copy). Lowndes p. 2521; Madan Oxford Books 2283; Wing W-5728A.
