Details
HAYES, William (1735-1802). Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds, with their Descriptions, from the Menagery of Osterley Park. London: W. Bulmer, 1794-1799.

2 volumes in one, 4° (285 x 222mm). Hand-coloured engraved plate of the menagery and 100 hand-coloured plates of birds after Hayes, his wife and children. (A few plates very lightly spotted.) Contemporary green straight-grained morocco, triple gilt fillet round panels of spine and sides, title in gilt on spine, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed).

Second, enlarged edition of this delightful work on the birds of the famous menagery at Osterley Park; the first had appeared in 1782 with only 66 plates. No fewer than seven members of his family collaborated on the venture: his wife Anne, and his children Charles, William, Annette, Emily, Maria and Matilda. Unfortunately for Hayes, the price in terms of health and effort was too high. His children, however helpful as artists, remained at home to be supported by him long after marriageable age, contributing to the state of distress in which he died. Nissen IVB 422 (variant title); Zimmer p. 294.
