Engraved title-vignettes, frontispieces, that in volume II a mezzotint, and 15 plates. (Some light browning, spotting and offsetting.) Contemporary calf, gilt spine with a small tool of a horse in compartments, gilt dentelle border round sides with fleuron cornerpieces, marbled edges (rebacked with original spine preserved, a little rubbed and discoloured, corners worn). Provenance: S. Gosling, 1802 (signature on title, given to:) -- Colonel Stevens -- S. Farmer (bookplate). ONLY EDITION of an interesting discourse on the history of the horse, including a translation of Xenophon's treatise on horsemanship and a dissertation on the ancient chariot and chariot racing by Thomas Pownall.
