LA FONTAINE, Jean de (1621-1695). Fables choisies, mises en vers, edited by C.P. de Monthenault d'Egly. Paris: Charles-Antoine Jombert for Desaint & Saillant and Durand, 1755-59.
4 volumes, large 2° (464 x 320 to 472 x 323mm). LARGE PAPER ISSUE. Engraved portrait of Oudry by Tardieu after Largillière, portrait of La Fontaine by Cochin fils after Oudry and 275 plates by Cochin, Tardieu, Prévost, Chedel, Lempereur and others after JEAN-BAPTISTE OUDRY, 209 woodcut title-vignettes, en-têtes and culs-de-lampe by Bachellier, half-titles. (Plate 24 in volume II rather stained, portrait of Oudry somewhat spotted and a little offset onto title, a few other insignificant marks elsewhere.) Contemporary Parisian red morocco, spine compartments with morocco labels and large gilt fleuron surrounded by small tools, triple gilt fillet round sides, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (spines lightly faded). Provenance: Christopher Turnor, Stoke Rochford Library (1809-1886, armorial bookplate).
A FINE COPY OF THE LARGE-PAPER ISSUE of one of the most ambitious and successful of all illustrated books exemplified by the skill with which Cochin adapted Oudry's loose drawings into a state ready for the engraver. In the same Avertissement he also relates how Oudry came to execute the drawings and gives a brief history of the publication of the book. In common with most large paper issues the plate of 'Le singe et le léopard' is in the first state without writing on the banner. (4)
