LA GUÉRINIÈRE, François Robichon de (d.1751). École de cavalerie contenant la connoissance, l'instruction, et la conservation du cheval. Paris: Jacques Collombat, 1733.
2° (441 x 285mm). Additional engraved title, 15 plates, 4 double-page, 12 engraved diagrams and illustrations, 8 full-page, mostly after Charles Parrocel, engraved arms of the dedicatee, Prince Charles de Lorraine. (Quires Q and R misbound in reverse order.) Contemporary speckled calf, gilt spine, 'Traquair House' in upper cover and the library's press-mark in gilt on a calf label pasted to top compartment of spine (spine-ends a little worn, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Charles Stewart, Earl of Traquair, Traquair House (armorial bookplate, of either the 4th Earl, c. 1659-1741, or the 5th Earl, 1697-1764).
THE TRAQUAIR HOUSE COPY. Third edition of a work which Mennessier de la Lance calls 'un des plus beaux ouvrages qui aient paru en France sur le Cheval. Papier, caractères, tout est irréprochable et les belles planches de Parrocel lui donnent une valeur particulière'. In about 1715, the author opened a riding school in Paris with the backing of the comte d'Armagnac, where not only equitation was taught, but also everything that was relevant to equestrian science. In 1730 the Prince of Lorraine, the dedicatee of this book, established him in the Academy of the Tuileries which he managed until his death. Both of his academies consistently made a loss and La Guérinière spent his whole life in financial embarrassment. Mellon/Podeschi 46; Mennessier de la Lance II, p. 27.
