THE ROSEBERY COPY OF VANDERBANK'S ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE MANèGE. Vanderbank, better known as a portrait painter, was the son of Peter Vanderbank, the French engraver who died in England shortly before John was born. For a while, during the reign of George I, he enjoyed a great reputation; but his vicious and extravagant habits earned him a spell in a debtor's prison and hastened his early death. His portrait is included in the group of artists painted by Hogarth. Mellon/Podeschi 44.
