The Sportsman's Magazine or Chronicle of Games and Pastimes ... for August 1823 [-January 1825]. London: Hodgson, 1823-1825. 3 volumes in 10 including 2 supplements (vol. III in six parts), 12° and 8° (148 x 89mm). Engraved titles, and 20 plates, including one hand-coloured and one folding, illustrations. (Some spotting and light staining.) Vol. I and II in original plain wrappers, vol.III in original printed wrappers, 2 vols. in modern paper boards (printed wrappers slightly soiled and worn). Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (his sale, 11 March 1946, lot 2016). The Complete Angler and Barker's Delight were published in this complete run of The Sportman's Magazine. They were issued with separate pagination and often bound up separately. A complete run of the magazine is therefore rare. Schwerdt II, pp.221-222.
CRUIKSHANK, George (1792-1878). The Comic Almanack. London: Charles Tilt, 1835-1853. 19 volumes, 8° and 12° (162 x 100mm, 142 x 92mm). 4 coloured folding frontispieces, plates, advertisements for first volume and last 6 volumes. (Some spotting, neat tear to one leaf, one plate slightly trimmed not affecting image.) Contemporary polished calf gilt spine by Rivière, original printed wrappers of last 6 volumes bound in. Provenance: Herbert S. Lyon (bookplate). This set includes the 'very scarce' first issue of 1845 and the first issue of 1848: Cohn 184. (31)
