BLAGDON, Francis William (1778-1819). Authentic Memoirs of the Late George Morland ... with a facsimile of his writing, specimens of his hieroglyphic sketches, &c. London: Barnard and Sultzer for Edward Orme, 1806 [but watermarked 1824].
Large oblong 2° (443 x 576mm). Portrait frontispiece and 19 coloured plates, etched facsimile of Morland's writing printed as an illustration on p.12 of the text. (Occasional light marginal soiling.) Contemporary half roan (extremities rubbed, upper corners of covers with old, crude repairs).
FIRST EDITION, THIRD, DEFINITIVE ISSUE OF 'AN EXTREMELY SCARCE BOOK' (Tooley). Morland's considerable reputation in his own lifetime was based mainly on the engravings that were made of his work. The many different processes employed, aquatint, soft-ground etching, stipple and mezzotint, are revealed in this book, the mezzotints being colour-printed, while other plates are hand-coloured. The title, Authentic Memoirs, seems justified since the chaotic life Morland led meant that he left no written record of his own work. cf. Abbey Life 208 (upright folio issue); Tooley 91.
