Foreign Field Sports, Fisheries, Sporting Anecdotes, &c. &c. From Drawings by Messrs. Howitt, Atkinson, Clark, Manskirch ... with a Supplement of New South Wales, London: H.R. Young, 1819.
2° (329 x 230mm). 110 hand-coloured plates, comprising 107 aquatints and 3 line engravings. (Without half-title, occasional very light soiling, slight offsetting). Publisher's binding of dark blue straight-grained morocco, gilt eagle in panels of spine, gilt tiger on raised bands, wide gilt and blindstamped border round sides, at centre a gilt stag within a leafy and floral cartouche, gilt edges (hinges and extremities slightly rubbed, upper inner hinge broken). Provenance: James Wood (contemporary signature on an endpaper).
LARGE PAPER COPY, second edition, containing the same plates, though bound in a different order, as the first edition of 1814. The plates include a series of twelve on bullfighting and ten illustrating hunting as practised by aborigines in Australia. It is interesting to note the varying colours of morocco used for the deluxe publisher's binding, Abbey's copy being red, Schwerdt's olive green and this copy blue. Tooley and Schwerdt call for a half-title whereas Abbey does not. Abbey Travel I, 3; Schwerdt I, p.179; Tooley 225.
