GOSDEN, Thomas -- [John LAWRENCE (1753-1839)]. The Sportsman's Repository ... representing the Horse and the Dog, in all their Varieties. London: for Sherwood, Neely and Jones, 1820. 4° (277 x 213mm). Additional engraved title by Ovenden after Tomkins and 37 plates by John Scott after Marshall, Sartorius, Reinagle and others. EXTRA-ILLLUSTRATED with 25 engraved plates, many before letters, many on india paper, several inscribed in pencil by Thomas Gosden, and 7 wood-engraved vignettes pasted in. (Occasional browning and offsetting.) In a Gosden binding of contemporary calf, gilt ornaments in panels of spine, wide gilt dentelle border round sides with a fox's mask at corners, gilt edges (head of spine worn, slight signs of wear on upper cover). Provenance: THOMAS GOSDEN (1780-1840; bookplate).
Schwerdt describes Thomas Gosden as 'a bookbinder, an artist of no mean order, and a friend of Ben. Marshall, J. Scott, A. Cooper and others to whom we are indebted for sporting pictures and engravings. In collaboration with these friends he published several sporting books bearing the stamp of good taste and true artistic feeling which guided him in the choice of emblematic tooling when binding sporting books and chiefly those on angling'. The extra plates largely follow the subject matter of the book, but there is also a fine set of Scott's engravings of Gosden's celebrated silver buttons, inscribed in pencil by Gosden 'Only 12 Copies taken off on India paper, T.G.'
