[HOWITT, Samuel. Studies of Animals, London: Orme, plates dated 1801-22]. Oblong 4° (largest plate 227 x 270mm). 53 engraved plates, some before letters, one on india paper, 2 mounted. (Some spotting). Contemporary half calf (rather worn). Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY inscribed, in the recipient's hand in ink over pencil 'The Gift of Samuel Howitt who Etched them to his Friend William Edkins' and with an A.L.s. pasted to an endpaper, May 3d 1814, from Howitt to Edkins asking him to find suitable glass for a frame 'to put before a finished drawing of Flowers', offering to pay for it and also hoping to discover from the bearer of the letter how Edkins' daughter is. With Edkins' bookplate designed by Howitt - Roger Ford (carte de visite). Cf. Nissen ZBI 2017 & 2018.
