Lot Essay

A pair of this model from the collection of The Hon. Mrs. Nellie Ionides, both yellow with brown markings, was sold Christie's London, 17 June 2003, lot 173. Pairs of the present lot's configuration, one splashed and one purplish brown, were in the collection of H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester, sold Christie's London, 20 May 1954, lot 12 and in the collection of Mrs. Warwick Bryant, sold Christie's London, 26 October 1955, lot 81. W.R. Sargent illustrates a sold amber example (The Copeland Collection, p. 63) and notes the influence of the Chinese horse model on European ceramics and then on Japanese porcelain, writing that the type "...has a monumentality and individuality matched by few other animal sculptures".
