Pairs of hawks or falcons, among the most lifelike of the Chinese bird models, with their heads jutted out just-so, were most often naturalistically enamelled in tones of sepia. (Compare the pair in the Copeland collection illustrated by W.R. Sargent, op. cit., p. 171, who records several references to hawks from 18th century auction catalogues.) The superb coloring of the present pair is quite unusual.
