Lot Essay

The Ten Broecks were a prominent Albany family for three generations and one of the earliest American-Dutch alliances. Dirck Ten Broeck, named after his 17th century Indian trader ancestor, married Miss Stuyvesant, daughter of Petrus Stuyvesant and Margaret Livingston, in 1785. He practiced law, served in the New York Assembly, and became Speaker of the House. A small platter from this service is in the Albany Institute of History and Art and was published by D.S. Howard in New York and the China Trade, p. 77.
