With a United States spread-winged eagle, the puce ribbon in his beak inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM and a shield on his chest with interlaced gilt script monogram, all within the characteristic pattern rendered in translucent pine green over black detail

Lot Essay

Designs inspired by the Great Seal of the United States became quite fashionable on Chinese export porcelain in the first decades of the new nation. A deep oval dish of very similar pattern was in the collection of Mildred and Rafi Mottahedeh, illustrated by D.S. Howard and J. Ayres, op. cit., p. 509.
