with black boot button eyes, pronounced clipped snout, beige stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, elongated jointed shaped limbs, cream left pads, large spoon shaped feet, hump and button in ear --20in. (51cm.) tall, circa 1908 (pin holes to right foot pad, slight wear to ankles and tips of feet); dressed in a contemporary sailor's suit

Lot Essay

The suit worn by this bear is clearly of high quality and made specially for this bear as it fits exactly. It is our opinion the suit was very possibly made during the period when dressed animals and bears were used for Steiff's advertising campaigns and promotional displays.
