The Eastern Steamship Company, Camden at sea

Camden was built for the Eastern Steamship Company by the Bath Iron Works at Bath, Maine, in 1907. A twin-screw steamer constructed of steel throughout, she was registered in Maine at 2,153 tons gross (1,143 net) and measured 320= feet in length with a 40 foot beam. Powered by steam turbines, her speed was subsequently increased when she was converted to triple-screw and she operated out of Boston on her company's coastal services up and down the eastern seabord for many years. By the outbreak of World War II, by which time she had been renamed Comet, she was being used on the overnight Long Island Sound ferry but was put to work as a war transport vessel in the Pacific in 1943 where, despite the limitations of age and size, she performed valuable work for the war effort. Sold to Chinese owners after the end of the War, she thereafter operated in the Far East until reportedly scrapped in 1950.
