Lot Essay

Iron jute clipper, 1227 tons, built in 18689 by Harland and Wolff. Sister ship of the Star of Persia no ships had a finer record in the Calcutta trade. the Star of India had a better record than that of the Persia probably owing to her famous Captain W.J.M. Shaws. the best passage to Calcutta was 79 day for both ships.
The Star of Greece was driven ashore at Willanga in a hard gale on the 13th July, 1888, when one day out from Adelaide, homeward bound. Captain Harrower , Mr. Waugh the second mate, the bosun, Carpenter Sailmaker and all Seaman except two were drowned. Mr. Hayeland the Mate, Mr. Cammerford the Third Mate and all six apprentices and two seaman were saved.
