Provenance
This toy has a handwritten card inscribed Henry Wall A present from Her Majesty Queen Victoria At Osborn Palace 27 December 1865

It was customary for the Queen and female members of the Christmas houseparty to give out the presents from the Christmas tree to children of employees on Boxing Day. In 1865 Boxing Day fell on a Sunday, so the presents were distributed on the 27th. Although there is no record of a Henry Wall on the register of children in the village school or amongst the servants, a few years later he is mentioned as an underfootman.
