A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPORTANT EDITION OF JOYCE'S MASTERPIECE containing the author's own account of the novel's troubled publishing history, contained in a letter to Bennett A. Cerf of Random House (2 April 1932), as well as the text of Judge John M Woolsey's judgement lifting the ban on the book's publication in the United States (6 December 1933) and a foreword by Random House's counsel, Morris L. Ernst, beginning 'The New Deal in the law of letters is here ...' A pirated edition of the novel, dated '1927' and bearing the imprint of Shakespeare and Company, had been distributed in the United States in 1929. A copy of this piracy sent by Joyce to Bennett Cerf was used in setting up the Random House edition, which is beautifully designed by Ernest Reichl, with bold, full-page initials facing the title page and the opening pages of the novel's three sections.
