Property from the Collection of Dr hc. and Mrs Erich G. Henkel (Lots 1-29) The following 29 lots form part of the fine collection of predominantly 19th century furniture and works of art assembled during the 1960s and 70s by the late Dr Erich G. Henkel and his second wife Ilse. Born in 1913, at a young age Erich Henkel joined his father in the family's long-established shoe-making business, eventually assuming sole control of operations and supervising the company's post-war expansion into a highly successful worldwide conglomerate. Regarded in his time as one of the key industrial figures in the Offenbach am Main and Isenburg regions of Germany, Dr Henkel was also highly respected for his extensive philanthropic activities: as an entrepreneur, he established a good health and social welfare system for his employees some fifteen years before its implementation by the State; and as a member of the wider community, his charitable works, both at home and overseas - the latter particularly with Catholic missions in South America and Asia - were widely respected. Characteristically modest, Dr Henkel was nevertheless awarded a number of titles in recognition of such philanthropy, among them, Consul; Bearer of the Papal Order of Saint Gregory; and Knight Commander with Star of the Holy Sepulchre. Of oval shape, the floral and foliate-decorated scalloped rim above a bulbous body decorated to one side with figures of Venus and two putti and to the reverse with muscial instruments and a bird's nest, applied with a pair of scrolled foliate handles, on spreading shaped foot
