His mother was Roumanian, and his father of Dutch nationality. He completed his studies in medicine with flying colours, specialising in internal medicine. He moved to Switzerland in 1973 to practise and to take up his true vocation. Cultured, erudite and of refined taste, he spoke several languages fluently. He travelled extensively, loving to learn and discover new things. As much as his practice allowed, he travelled to enrich his collections. His passion for fans was passed on to him from his grandmother when he was still a child. This lead to him staging an exhibition of fans in 1994 and to the production of an illustrated catalogue. Highlights of the collection on exhibition included Chinese, Japanese, Swiss, Spanish and many other fans. Dr Paul van Saanen was generous of heart and spirit - he loved to share - and so committed himself to many humanitarian causes, and notably built a dispensary in Northern Roumania entirely staffed and funded by like minded friends. Tragically, a fatal illness struck him at the height of his powers, after a life lived intensively, leaving his family, his patients and his friends with the unforgettable memory of a passionate man of taste.
