The Holy Roman emperor, Leopold I, was the second son of the emperor Ferdinand III and his first wife Maria Anna, daughter of Philip III of Spain. Leopold I was chosen as King of Hungary in 1655, in 1656 king of Bohemia, and in July 1658, more than a year after his father's death, he was elected emperor of Frankfurt. He spent his life arranging and directing wars, among others, against the Turks and against France. His long reign covers an important period of European history.
