A famille rose armorial pattipan
Circa 1760
Painted with a coat-of-arms surmounted by a coronet, flanked by two rampant lions and the inscription: 'Abraham: van : Sundert', the upright lobed hexafoil sides painted with scrolling lotus in blue enamel and a spearhead-pattern band in iron-red and gilt, very small rim chip
13.5 cm. diam.

Special notice

Lot Essay

A saucer with an identical coat-of-arms but different rim decoration, is illustrated in D.S. Howard & J. Ayers, China for the West, London, 1978, vol. II, 403, pl. 402. The author notes that these arms are not those of the Van Sundert family, but close to those of the city of Amsterdam. Abraham van Sundert was most likely a merchant or captain trading out of Amsterdam.
