These chairs are designed in the manner of French 'Easy Chairs' popularised by Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, 1754, with their ribbon-scrolled frames enriched with Roman acanthus in the centres and corners, and their feet with bubbled embossments. Chairs of this pattern were commissioned by the 5th Duke of Bolton (d.1765) of Hackwood Park, Hampshire, and Grosvenor Square, London. Amongst others who adopted this popular pattern of chairs was Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Powis (d.1772) (discussed in the catalogue of the sale the contents of Hackwood Park, Hampshire, Christie's house sale, 20-22 April 1998, lots 119-120).
