The pier-glass is designed in the George III Roman fashion promoted by the court architect Robert Adam (d. 1792). Poetic 'Apollo' laurels loop their sunflowered paterae and encircle its antique-fluted and 'Etruscan' pearl-strung frame, whose 'tablet' corners and centres are clasped by Roman acanthus. Matthias Lock included a related design, crowned by a sacred urn, in his patterns for 'Architectural Frames for Pictures and Glasses to be executed in carving or stucco', issued as Architectural Designs and Ornaments, 1769-1770 (pl. 79) (E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Designs, Woodbridge, 1990, p. 344). A related pier-glass was formerly at Keir, Perthshire (sold by Archibald Stirling, Keir, Perthshire, Christie's house sale, 22 May 1995, lot 85). Patterns for a related medallion pier-glasses, in French 'picturesque' frames comprised of entwined branches, featured in Thomas Johnson's Collection of designs, 1758, pls. 8 and 9.
