Lot Essay

The reed-banded medallions of richly figured mahogany on the lower doors reflect the Roman fashion popularised by Messrs A. Hepplewhite and Co's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788. The bookcases's mosaiced glazing pattern, with medallions framed in gothic arches, derives from a pattern in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788 (pl. 15, no. 11).
