Lot Essay

The Roman-medallion pier-glass, conceived in the George II 'picturesque' manner, evokes Jupiter as deity of the Elements, and the Roman concept of collegit ut spargat. Its sun-rayed and water-scalloped temple-pediment is supported by Jupiter's sacred oak, which issues from reeds and a cartouched water-pouring urn. Such an urn, together with a related pediment, feature in a pattern in Matthias Lock's Six Sconces, 1744 (pl. 4).
