Lot Essay
The Seasons in these pictures are represented by pastoral activities with 'scenes galantes' in the fashion popularised by Antoine Watteau (d. 1721) and Nicolas Lancret (d. 1743). Flora, the Spring deity, is evoked by a flower-gatherer; Ceres, the Summer deity, and Bacchus, the Autumn deity, are evoked by the harvesting of corn and grapes, and Winter by skaters.
They derive from Nicolas Lancret's Seasons, engraved in the 1740s by N. Larmessin (see S. Ducret, Die Zurcher Porzellanmanufaktur, Zurich, 1958, vol. II, pl. 246).
