Lot Essay

A closely related inkstand, with the dog's collar inscribed 'Fidele', was retailed by Thomas Weekes (d. 1834) of the 'Royal Mechanical Museum' or emporium in Tichbourne Street (sold anonymously, Christie's, South Kensington, 6 September 2005, lot 151).
