Lot Essay

The table's Grecian pattern of truss and plinth-supported pilasters on bacchic palm-wrapped lion-paws was popularised by an 1804 'sofa-table' design in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808 (pl. 84).
A related library table, with paired pilasters and stretchers on similar-carved feet, was formerly at Mere Hall, Cheshire and is likely to have been supplied in the 1820's by Gillows of Lancaster (sold by Mrs. Langford Brooke, Mere Hall, Christie's house sale, 23 May 1974, lot 105).
