The palm-wrapped altar-tripod stands, with bacchic lion heads and monopodia, reflect the antique fashion promoted by Thomas Sheraton's Encyclopaedia, 1804-8 and Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. The pattern corresponds to that of a pair Grecian-black stands with gilt enrichments that formed part of the Michael Behrens collection (sold Christie's, London, 6 July 1989, lot 156).
