The rectangular breakfront amboyna-veneered top above a fluted and Vitruvian-scroll frieze, above a pair of glazed doors enclosing two adjustable shelves flanked by stop-fluted Corinthian columns and a second pair of glazed doors, on a plinth base, redecorated, the back board with pressed metal label, inscribed 'MANUFACTURED BY GEO TROLLOPE & SONS HALKIN ST WEST BELGRAVE SQUARE LONDON', previously with a superstructure
36 in. (91.5 cm.) high; 78¾ in. (198.5 cm.) wide; 17 in. (43 cm.) deep.

Lot Essay

George Trollope & Sons were registered under this name in 1843 and are recorded in West Halkin Street by 1864. They undertook large scale refurbishments of residential property and in this way supplied furniture made by them to many of their customers. The firm was highly considered by the 1860s and exhibited at several International Exhibitions. The present side cabinet is conceived in the fashionable Italian 'Renaissance' revival style popularised by makers such as Trollope & Sons in the third quarter of the 19th century.
