MÄHLER-BESSE
Mähler-Besse is a third generation Bordeaux wine merchant. It was started by Frédérik Mähler in 1892. He was succeeded in 1945, by his son Henry. Since 1971, Franck Mähler-Besse has run the company.
Under his lead, the Mähler-Besse Company changed from a simple trading company to become the owners of estates in the Bordeaux region and in the prestigious Médoc and Saint-Emilion appellations. It controls a dozen châteaux, of which two are "Cru Bourgeois" (Château d'Arche and Château Picard) and three Saint Emilion Grand Crus (Le Fer, Château La Couronne and Château Bouquey).
Today, Mähler-Besse is one of few wine trading companies to collect great wines in order to let them mature in its own cellars: mythical wines bearing the greatest names of the Bordeaux region such as Haut-Brion, Latour, Margaux, Mouton, Palmer and many more. These thousands of cases which were bought as soon as they were put on the market, have been quietly lying in the half-darkness ever since.
CHATEAU PALMER
Palmer has long endeared itself to wine lovers who consistently pay prices that surpass those of its higher cru contemporaries. No doubt one of the sexiest wines of the left bank, Palmer adds more Merlot than any other Margaux for the combination of fleshy fat fruit tamed by a quintessential Margaux nose. Extremely long maceration periods and juice that is never filtered give additional dimension to the wines. Tonight's selection represents Palmer's glory days when the best wines of Margaux appellation were those of Château Palmer.
Being co-owner of Château Palmer, Mähler-Besse is offering especially for this sale two very rare Magnums of Château Palmer 1959 and 1961.
Using an old Bordelais tradition, Mähler-Besse puts on each bottle a neck label, which mentions the year it left their cellars. This tag shows the buyer that the bottle has never travelled and was aged in perfect conditions.
