CHATEAU PETRUS
Pétrus, one of the world's rarest and most expensive wines was not so well known until the 1960s like many other Right Bank wines. It was only when the Moueix family bought a half share in the property in 1962 that its true potential began to be fully realized. Pitrus is now under the direction of Christian Moueix and oenologist, Jean-Claude Berrouet.
This magical 11.4 hectare vineyard is located on a plateau on the highest part of Pomerol in the far east of the appellation. The topsoil and the subsoil at Pétrus are almost all clay (in neighboring properties the soil is a mixture of gravel-sand or clay-sand) and merlot flourishes in this soil. Pitrus' vineyard is planted with 95 Merlot. The vines are unusually old and are only replanted after they reach 70 years of age.
The fruit of these vines is hand-harvested only in the afternoon, when the morning dew has evaporated, so as not to risk even the slightest dilution of quality. The grapes are fermented in cement vats and the wine is aged in 100 new oak barrels for 22-28 months. It is bottled unfiltered.
Pétrus is extraordinarily rich, powerful and concentrated, often with characteristics of chocolates, truffles, Asian spices and ultra-ripe, creamy, black fruits. Pétrus is usually approachable after a decade or so in bottle, but the wines from the very greatest years will continue improving for many more years.
Pétrus has a mythical quality when poured and a magical taste when sipped; of all wines in the world it retains a mystique only broken when the cork is pulled.
Property of a North-East private collector
Removed from climate-controlled professional storage
Château Pétrus--Vintage 1982
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Five lightly wrinkled labels
In original wooden case
"From barrel, this remains one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted. Whether fining and filtration pulled more out of it than was intended, only the proprietor knows. However, the 1982 Petrus turned in a strong performance in Philadelphia in contrast to other tastings when it has been less than spectacular. The color reveals some amber at the edge. A sweet nose of caramel, roasted herbs, cherry jam, cedar, and smoke is followed by a thick, full-bodied, unctuously-textured, low acid Petrus that is approaching full maturity." Wine Advocate #129 (Jun 2000) Robert Parker
