J.F. MUGNIER

Frederic Mugnier renders superbly concentrated wines utilizing significant new oak and long, cold macerations. His wines are fragrant with sweet fruit and toast from an early yet with balance, mineral, earth and great aging potential. Though his vineyard holdings are relatively small throughout Chambolle, Mugnier is the second largest owner of Musigny after de Vogüé and has some of the best sections. Magnums are extremely rare.

Musigny--Vintage 1993
Côte de Nuits, JF Mugnier
Wine of the tasting at the New Year's eve 10th anniversary 1993 Burgundy tasting, standing out among 12 other Grand Crus of the usual suspects. Magnificent purple robe very nearly to the edge, the nose immediately fragrant and floral unwinding into finely delineated leather and iron-filing notes. Initially closed on the palate, though full and complete, opening up with blackberry and increasingly spicy earthiness. Possesses the requisite elegance of Musigny with outstanding depth and concentration, definitely has an extra dimension over the de Vogue. ***** JC 12/31/02.
