Lot Essay

Born in Rockland, Maine, William Partridge Burpee received his formal training from William Bradford in the late 1870s. By 1885 Burpee was painting in Maine and on Lynn Beach, Massachusetts in a style that reflected the influence of French painting - particularly that of Eugene Boudin and Emile Louis Vernier.
Burpee exhibited his work regularly at the Boston Art Club, Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C. and the American Watercolor Society, New York.
Burpee's work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Massachusetts, the Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia, South Carolina, the William A. Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine, and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine.
