The three persons depicted in this set are all important figures of the Jacobite uprisings of the 18th Century. James Edward Stewart, or the Old Pretender, was the son of James II by his second wife, Mary of Modena. He was seen by English and Scottish catholics and those loyal to the Stewart dynasty as the rightful heir to the English throne. Married to Marie Sobieska, he grew up in the French court, where he was recognised by Louis XIV as James III of England. After several abortive attempts led by his son, Bonnie Prince Charlie, or the Young Pretender, culminating in the bloody defeat at Culloden in 1746, father and son retired to Rome, where they were offered hospitality by the Pope and where they ended their days.
