Lot Essay

The present owners of Drifters met Vettriano while photographing him in his studio for Avenue magazine. The composition relates to another work, The Drifter, showing a single figure carrying a suitcase with his back to the viewer (see A.Quinn, Jack Vettriano, London, 2004, p.58, illustrated). The artist added the initials of the present owners when he gave them the picture. Vettriano later transformed the portrait photograph taken by the present owner into an oil painting (see A.Quinn, Jack Vettriano, London, 2004, p.13, illustrated).
