Lot Essay

For a discussion of the Yangzhou school and its production of wares for the Court, see the footnote to lot 67. The subject is known on classic Yangzhou glass overlay bottles of the mid-Qing period, and the painterly style and genre scenes are typical of the town. A Guyue Xuan-marked enameled white glass cylindrical bottle painted in a similar palette and with a similar floral border encircling the neck, but decorated with a squirrel and bamboo, in the collection of Denis Low is illustrated by R. Kleiner, Treasures from the Sanctum of Enlightened Respect, p. 30, no. 22.

In the 1860's, Zhao Zhiqian noted the existence of Guyue Xuan bottles, some with Qianlong marks and some with Guyue Xuan marks. See Zhao Zhiqian, Yonglu xianjie ('Researches done During Spare Time in to the Realm of Yong Lu, God of the Nose: The Yonglu xianjie of Zhao Zhiqian'),JICSBS, 1991, p. 18.
