For other inside-painted snuff bottles showing exotic animals painted by members of the Ye family, see JICSBS, Spring 1984, p. 66, fig. 188; Autumn 1984, p. 82, fig. 240; and Spring 1985, p. 99, fig. 255. All three, like the present bottle, are signed as if they were by Ye Zhongsan, but they are more likely to have been painted by Ye Xiaofeng in the family workshop. An earlier bottle from the same studio showing a larger group of animals was sold at Sotheby's New York, 23 April 1981, lot 109. Ye Xiaofeng worked alongside his father and two brothers in the family studio (The Apricot Grove Studio) for many years prior to the 1950s, when he and his surviving brother, Ye Bengqi, set up their own studio in Beijing to teach a new generation of artists.
