Lot Essay

This is a classic example of a range of yellow nephrite used for articles intended for the Court, even to the creamy-brown flaw arising from staining from the surface skin of a pebble material. The vase form is also typical of the Palace workshops of the Qianlong period, a variation of the meiping ('prunus-blossom vase') form. A related example in the J & J Collection, is illustrated by Moss et. al., The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, vol. 1, no. 36, sold in our Hong Kong room, 25 April 2004, lot 830. See, also, Moss, Graham, Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, vol. 1, Jade, for five examples with two loops flanking the neck, nos. 75-6 and nos. 81-3, and two bottles of similar shape and also with three loops, nos. 84 and 85. Another yellow jade bottle with three loops flanking the neck in the Palace Museum, Beijing is illustrated in Snuff Bottles - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, p. 156, no. 238.
