EUSTACHIUS, Bartholomaeus (c. 1520-1574). Tabulae anatomicae. Amsterdam: R. & G. Wetstein, 1722. 2° (369 x 225mm). Half title, title printed in red and black with a large engraved vignette of a dissection of a cadaver in an anatomy theatre, 47 engraved anatomical plates and one unnumbered plate with 2 graduated scales (unnumbered plate browned, fol. 110-113 misbound after index, very occasional light spotting or light staining, plate X with late marginal staining). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine elaborately tooled in gilt (3 corners repaired, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Petrus Bassuel? (faded inscription on title); extensive modern manuscript annotations in pencil on Eustachius on front pastedown.
A GOOD, CLEAN AND CRISP COPY of the second edition. "Had Eustachi's full series of forty-seven anatomical copperplates been published at the time of their completion in 1552, Eustachi would have ranked with Vesalius as the founder of modern anatomy. As it happened, only the first eight were issued during Eustachi's lifetime, while the remaining thirty-nine were lost for over a century after Eustachi's death" (Norman 740, first edition). Wellcome II, 536.
