GRAVES, Robert (1895-1985). Two autograph letters signed, to Louis Rodrigues, Canellun deya Mallorca, 1 October 1969 and Deya, 13 April 1970, together 3 pages, 4to and 8vo, with envelopes.
'All that really matters is writing the poems and telling the truth, and living a life dedicated to the most exacting profession there is...'. In these letters to the poet Rodrigues, Graves discusses the writing and publishing of poetry, unconcerned by the problems of getting work published, 'first I was published as a 'war poet'; then I was not published because the war had ended...', then 'modernism was old hat... suddenly I was in fashion'. Although Graves begins his second letter complaining that too many poets send him their work, and that they should be confident of their own genius rather than seeking others' opinions, he nevertheless gives a detailed and lively critique of Rodrigues's work, 'Infused by what? Tea? Does an owl whit? or does it tu-whit?'. Graves has strong opinions on the writing of poetry, feeling that poets should question every word - 'it is a moral matter, not one of art'. (2)
