'Puck-and-pegasus' title-vignette on title after Aubrey Beardsley and 25 plates after Beerbohm (a few very light marks). Original blue pictorial cloth gilt [Gallatin and Oliver variant b], upper board with self-caricature after Beebohm and lower board with a repeat of the title-vignette, spine lettered in gilt with 'LEONARD SMITHERS AND CO 1896' at the foot (some very light rubbing and marking, endpapers spotted).

The subjects represent a cross-section of late-Victorian society and include writers (Richard Le Gallienne, Frank Harris, Rudyard Kipling, and George Bernard Shaw), artists, musicians, and actors (Aubrey Beardsley, the designer of the title-vignette, Ignace Paderewski, and Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Beerbohm's half-brother), and politicians (the Earl of Rosebery, Arthur James Balfour, and Joseph Chamberlain).
