Lot Essay

Artists Jamil Naqsh and Avinash Chandra both shared the urge to leave their native country in order to fully realize their artistic ambitions. Jamil Naqsh, one of Pakistan's most celebrated living artists, was born in Kairana in the Uttar Pradesh province of India and trained as a youth in Miniature painting. Focusing the subject of his oeuvre on the nude, the horse and the pigeon, the latter taken from the symbolic language of miniatures, Naqsh's love for the female form was particularly inspired by his companion and muse of 34 years, Najmi Sura.
