Lot Essay

Voluptuous female nudes appear frequently in Keyt's paintings, taking their stylistic cues from Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, but his evident delight in the female form is usually tempered by a spiritual dimension. From the mid 1930s Keyt became interested in Indian religions, with Hinduism in particular having a profound influence on the subject matter of his art. Both the erotic sculpture of ancient Sri Lankan and Indian temple sites and Hindu sacred texts such as the Gita Govinda were a source of inspiration for him.
