Lot Essay

The bombardment of the Russian fortress of Sebastopol by the British, French and Turkish fleets on 17th October 1854 was one of the great events of the Crimean war. Turkey had been attacked by Russia and the British and French came to their aid. After fierce fighting on both sides the Russians withdrew and scuttled their fleet. The city of Sebastopol remained unconquered.
