Lot Essay

It is thought that the table with fruit and geraniums are in a loggia either on or below the Via Tragara looking westwards towards
Castiglione, with the ruined fortress of Federico Barbarossa at its peak.
In the middle distance are walls of the Certosa (built by the Carthusian monks) and half way up the hill, beneath the fortress, is Via Castello and its villas, where Norman Douglas began to build his Villa Daphne before the
first World War.
Gennaro Favai's book of drawings, 'Capri' (Venice 1930), shows the same period and style. Favai's plate 6 shows a similar view of Castiglione with Via Castello from a higher viewpoint on Tragara.
